A Mesa voice

I am writing to express my concern about the proposal to close Mesa Elementary. Quick Intro: • My family and I moved to South Boulder a little over a year ago. My wife works for a small local business, and I am an entrepreneur. We selected South Boulder to raise our family, predominantly bc of the quality of the public schools and our belief that the neighborhood was perfect for young families. • We have a 5 and 3 year old. We selected Mesa for our 5 year-old because we felt the school stood out against Bear Creek and Creekside. Our 5-year old is now a Kindergartner at Mesa and so far is loving it! • We believe South Boulder is one of the most desirable places in the world to live, and certainly within Boulder. We expect to see more young families move into South Boulder as older residents move out. We believe the proposal to close Mesa makes South Boulder less desirable. My questions for the board: 1. can you share the economic analysis that suggests closing Mesa and other schools creates an obvious and clear ROI across the BVSD budget, the student population, and teacher population, and the parent population 2. can you share the risk analysis that demonstrates you have deeply considered the risk of closing schools like Mesa (to families, teachers, students, parents, neighborhoods, and the broader Boulder community). 3. how much money will be saved from closing Mesa and others? And what % of the budget do those savings represent? and how will those savings be allocated moving forward?
