I am concerned that the BVSD Board has made a financial argument for this proposal, but has not properly vetted operational impact. Our students will suffer the consequences of this. A 1-2 year delay on implementation is a reasonable request to ensure that this has been studied and that a plan is in place. A few important questions: How does open enrollment factor into capacity: Bear Creek is a top school for open enrollment, and Mesa has many of these students. Are existing open enrollment students grandfathered in? What about siblings? I didn't see this factored into capacity numbers. How is SAC (School After Care) affected: Last year, Bear Creek sold out and many families did not get spots. This was not an issue at Mesa. School ends at 2:50- many working parents rely on SAC. What is the plan to ensure support here? What happens to the Mesa building: is it sold to a private developer or does it become a community space? This has a huge impact on the community. How are teachers and staff being taken care of: do they have severance packages and transition support? Have you mapped out potential capacity increases: CU South getting built, an aging demographic moving out of homes, world class events like Sundance increasing the desirability of Boulder. These also seem like likely factors to drive up enrollment in the coming years, just as demographic trends have driven it down. Do you have future forecast scenarios in addition to how you're mapping past trendlines. With Mesa and Montessori both affected, there won't be a community option to fall back on.
